Reactivated Chapters of the 8th District Kirk L. Dunham, born September 19, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, to George and Della Dunham. He is the elder of two sons, and has a younger brother, Eric who is two years younger. Kirk attended Catholic elementary and high schools, while in Chicago. After graduating from high school, he attended college in Wisconsin, Lakeland College, where he received his Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology in 1972. After graduating from Lakeland, he returned to Chicago where he worked for the Circuit Court of Cook County as a Juvenile Probation Officer. While working in that capacity he returned to school and received a Master’s Degree, in Corrections, with an emphasis on Law Enforcement, from Chicago State University. In 1978, Kirk relocated to Denver where he has resided for the past 32 years. Kirk joined the Denver Police Department in August of 1979 and he worked there in several capacities for 30 years. He retired as a Sergeant from that department. During his career, Sergeant Dunham was the recipient of numerous awards including the Medal of Valor and a Purple Heart. For the past 19 years, Kirk has been an active member of Chi Phi Chapter, of Omega Psi Phi Inc. During his early years in the fraternity he often worked in the background serving on numerous committees, providing “sweat equity” on various chapter projects. However, at other times, he moved to the forefront and took on leadership roles, in other successful efforts. During the early 90’s, he served on Chi Phi’s executive council, where he was the chapters’ Keeper of Finance for six years. He was the Co-Chairman of the first Colorado Ques’ Ski Summit, held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. For a number of years, Kirk served as the Chairman for his favorite project, the Assault on Illiteracy program. That program was run in conjunction with our Black History Month project and worked with local Elementary, Middle and High School children from the Denver Public system. Over the past five years he has truly demonstrated his enthusiasm as he served as the Colorado State Representative to the 8th District, under both, our very own Chapter Brother and Past District Representative, Jeffery T. Smith, as well as the Immediate Past District Representative Glenn Rice. While serving in that capacity as the State Representative, Kirk ran for and was elected Basileus of Chi Phi Chapter for the 2008/2009 calendar years. Shortly after taking over as Basileus, he continued with the charge left to him by his predecessor, Past Basileus, Theron “Greg” Labrie. Brother Labrie had set the stage for and outstanding but yet to be held, 60th Eighth District meeting to be held in Denver, Colorado. The culmination of Kirk’s first year in office, centered on his determination when taking charge of putting together Chi Phi’s scrapbook submission for the 8th District’s “Chapter of the Year.” After winning that award, Kirk stated, ‘it’s so good when a plan comes together. Kirk’s is proud to say that in his second term as Basileus of Chi Phi that the chapter was again recognized as the Eighth District Chapter of the Year. Kirk says that his biggest accomplishments, since joining the fraternity, are his being named Chi Phi Chapter’s, 2009 Omega Man of the Year, Chi Phi Chapter being named as the 2009 Graduate Chapter of the Year, at the 2010 Grand Conclave in Raleigh, NC, and last but certainly not least, his being elected for a third term as Basileus of Chi Phi chapter for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. In addition to being a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kirk is a life member of the National Black Police Officers Association. Kirk, after thirty years of service to the citizens of the City and County of Denver, retired as a Sergeant with the Denver Police Department. Even though Kirk has retired from the Police Department, he is not going to take all his irons out of the fire. Kirk will continue, as he has for the past four years, working as an Associate Professor at Regis University, in their Criminology Department. In that regard, he was included in the 2010 America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals. Kirk is married to Yolanda Walker-Dunham. He is the father of three daughters, Margo, Lindsay, and Alexis; he also has a son, Eric, who is a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp.

Chapter Member: Brother Kirk L. Dunham
Basileus- Chi Phi Chapter, Denver. CO
The history of Chi Phi Chapter, located in Denver, Colorado, the Queen City of the Plains, dates back to the year 1927. During this time there were several detached members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity residing in Denver. The members were Dr. Clarence F. Holmes, who was at the time the District Representative of the Eighth District; Fritz Cansler of Pi Omega Chapter of Baltimore, Maryland; Archiec McKinney of Theta Chapter, Wiley College, Marshall, Texas; and Bazella G. Rainey of Psi Chapter, Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia. As a result of a series of meetings and the approval of the Supreme Council, permission was given to establish a chapter in Denver, Colorado. On December 26, 1927, a formal initiation was held, and Dr. J.H.P. Westbrook, Dr. T.T. McKinney, Thomas Campbell, Esq., Frank Brickler, Preston Wooten, and Dudley B. Luck became members of the fraternity in the new chapter known as Chi Phi. From the begginning, down through the years to the present time, Chi Phi chapter has played an important part in many types of activities in Denver. Its members have exemplified the four cardinal principles of Scholarship, Manhood, Perseverance, and Uplift as they have gone about their different ways in contributing to the growth of the city. It would be difficult to attempt to list the many achievements of the men who have been and who presently are members of this chapter. Name any worthwhile activity, and one will find men of this chapter taking a leading role. The members of the chapter have dedicated themselves to continue to carry out the will of Omega. It is this fact alone which guides the men as they constantly contribute to the growth of better and more fruitful activities in Denver.
