Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Mission Statement:

"Make a Difference in the Lives of Black People"
The mission today is the same as it was in 1911 when Founders Love, Cooper, Coleman and Just created our Brotherhood.
Omega Psi Phi operates on three levels. The International Level or Grand Level where strategy is conceived; the district level where that strategy is further communicated to the field, and the chapter level where the strategy is executed.
Every thing rises and falls on leadership and it is most important at the Grand level where strategy is derived and chapter level where the mission is carried out.

THE OMEGA PSI PHI
HAITI RESPONSE

OMEGA PSI PHI FRATERNITY, INC.

1911

Since our last update, several brothers have told me about their contributions of time and treasure in their local community.  That is good.  Keep the updates coming.  During the International Undergraduate summit, I had a chance to talk with several members of our first international undergraduate chapter in Canada, one of whom was from Haiti

So far, we have identified six members from or with family in Haiti.  If you know of a brother who is from Haiti or has family in Haiti, send that information to your District Representative so that he can cumulate it and send it to IHQ.  We would rather duplicate names than miss one.

We are encouraging everyone to continue to work actively with local relief efforts and to make an additional monetary contribution to and through Omega Charities at 3951 Snapfinger Parkway - suite 202, Decatur GA 30035.

All contributions are appreciated; however, we hope the minimum chapter contribution would be $100; district $500; SC member $100 and IHQ $5,000. We are hopeful more individual members will also make contributions through Omega Charities.

During the first five days of our appeal, no chapters or Districts have responded to the call, however, individual members from all over the country have contributed just over $2200.00 to this cause.  Epsilon Iota Foundation in Austin Texas has contributed $500 and challenges other Fraternal Foundations to do the same.

As promised, we have set up an information hotline at the International Headquarters.  We hope to update the message every other day.  You may also leave messages for the Grand Basileus on the line.  The number is (404) 942-3256.

After this email, we will only send correspondence to your Chapter and District Leadership via our own email server.  Please encourage your chapter officers to check their email frequently for updates on this and other important matters.

Thank you for all you do for Omega and all of humanity!

8th District  Stepshow

                                 2010
On behalf of the Step Show Committee I extend greetings and salutations. It is with extreme pleasure that we announce the Step Show portion of the Annual 8th District Meeting scheduled for April 16-18, 2010. Throughout the sixty one year history of the conference the Step Show has been one of the entertainment highlights of the weekend - and this year will prove to be no different.

We all know that step shows have long been one of the primary vehicles by which non-Greeks are exposed to the Divine Nine.  It is true that the high energy, massive enthusiasm, and rhythmic dancing of the teams provide entertainment value. On another level, step shows showcase the organizations’ deep linkage with military tradition and African culture, as evidenced by all members as being synchronized and on one accord. It is our hope that the legacy of Black Greekdom can be transmitted to the conference attendees by means of this event. To that end, it is our pleasure to extend an invitation to your step team to participate in this year’s show.  We anticipate registering teams from across the area encompassed by the 8th District: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, the Dakotas, and New Mexico.  Each performance will be limited to seven minutes. Judges will be composed of graduate organization members and will interpret the routines along the lines of complexity, creativity, uniformity, and crowd reaction. If you have questions regarding this event, please contact Jerry Washington, jrocc99@yahoo.com.
We’ll see you Friday, April 16th!!!

Regards,

Dr. Charles R. Drew Scholarship Commission
Who is Dr. Charles R. Drew?
Charles Richard Drew (3 June 1904 – 1 April 1950) was an African American physician and medical researcher. He researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge in developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II, saving thousands of lives of the Allied forces. He protested against the practice of racial segregation in the donation of blood as it lacked scientific foundation, which got him fired. In 1943, Drew's distinction in his profession was recognized when he became the first black surgeon to serve as an examiner on the American Board of Surgery.   A persistent urban legend holds that Drew was denied care by a nearby hospital because of his race when he was involved in a car accident, and bled to death. This is denied by one of the other black doctors with whom he was travelling, who stated: "We all received the very best of care. The doctors started treating us immediately. He had a superior vena caval syndrome—blood was blocked getting back to his heart from his brain and upper extremities. To give him a transfusion would have killed him sooner. Even the most heroic efforts couldn't have saved him. I can truthfully say that no efforts were spared in the treatment of Drew, and, contrary to popular myth, the fact that he was a Negro did not in any way limit the care that was given to him.

During the month of June in each year, chapters host a blood drive in his honor to commemorate his life.

Brother Rudy Boone will again head our efforts this year in coordinating our Dr. Charles R. Drew Scholarship.  Please click the links below to access the Brochure and Application.

AMERICA'S LARGEST BLACK FRATERNITIES UNITE WITH BIG BROTHERS BIGSISTERS TO HELP BOSYS WITH ABSENT FATHERS SUCCEED!!

Philadelphia, PA, June 15, 2009 -- Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi, the nation's largest African-American Fraternities, have joined forces in an unprecedented union with Big Brothers Big Sisters to help black boys -- often referred to the organization by single mothers -- succeed.  The fraternities -- which represent 250,000 college educated-men, many who are among prominent African American business and community leaders -- are not attempting to replace missing fathers.  Rather, they expect their involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters as mentors, advocates, fundraisers and influencers, to help African American boys and other children break negative cycles.

Most children mentored through Big Brothers Big Sisters' nearly 400 agencies are from single-parent families, households experiencing poverty or homes where a parent is incarcerated.  Independent research finds children with Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors are more likely than their peers to stay in school, avoid violence, reject illegal activities and have positive relationships with their families and others.

The collaborative effort will expand Big Brothers Big Sisters' near 20-year national partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha.   Together, the fraternities will work with the organization to develop programs to encourage members and friends in their large professional, personal and social networks to also support the nation's largest donor-supported network of volunteer mentors for youth.  The men will urge those in their networks to become Big Brothers; donate and raise funds for the top-rated charity; serve on boards of directors for local agencies in their communities; create sponsorship partnerships with their employers; host recruiting and other engagement events, and provide enrichment programs for Little Brothers and boys who are ready to be matched.

"This landmark partnership greatly strengthens our engagement in African American communities and will be significant in helping us serve many more children, particularly growing numbers of boys whose moms are seeking our help," said Judy Vredenburgh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

In addition to joining forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters to develop new national initiatives, the fraternities will expand successful programs launched in recent years by individual local agencies and fraternity chapters.  Big Brothers Big Sisters is also working to build partnerships with two other historically black fraternities -- Phi Beta Sigma, which has a tradition of formal mentoring through its Sigma Beta Club, and Iota Phi Theta, which has a history of participation in Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Existing Big Brothers Big Sisters engagements with the Omegas include:

Omega Psi Phi
Through Operation Lamp Light the fraternity is working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit to adopt a Detroit high school and build a relationship with a core group of 13- to 14-year-old boys... Some Omegas are spending one-on-one time with boys while the larger fraternity supports bimonthly workshops or field trips to museums and sporting events.

Syndicated sports radio hosts and Omega Psi Phi members The 2 Live Stews (Doug and Ryan Stewart) biological brothers who are also Big Brothers are leading a viral campaign sending men to MentoringBrothers.org, a micro site established with a grant from the Arby's Foundation.

In Louisville the Theta Omega chapter created its Men of Quality Program, which mentors youth based on the fraternity's four cardinal principles - Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift through a Lifestyles Choices Forum.

About Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is an organizational Brotherhood consisting of over 750 chapters throughout the world.  The fraternity is a historically Black fraternal organization that provides and promotes programs of social, cultural and economic uplift to the communities we serve.  For almost a century, we have recruited, trained and deployed men of color for leadership roles in service to humanity. Our social action programs touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of families and individuals each year. Whether our efforts result in entertaining an audience, educating a group of young people; or simply helping those in need, we have developed a reputation for delivering programs and projects that make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps vulnerable children beat the odds.  The organization depends on donations to help conduct background checks on volunteers to ensure child safety; and provide ongoing support for children, families and volunteers to build and sustain long-lasting relationships, key to successful mentoring.  Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent research to improve children's odds for succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and breaking negative cycles.  Headquartered in Philadelphia and with nearly 400 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves more than a quarter million children.
